Friday Random 10: 20 November 2009

So I've been blasting all 6.5 gigs of DJ Mal's Dance-Party-To-Go (apologies to Dr. X) all night while I take a break from writing my proposals by... reading papers for my proposal. But now it's time to start decompressing so I can pretend to sleep at some point tonight. So I'm going to subject you all to this.

1. Pig - Find It, Fuck It, Forget It (Sump Mix). I think my affection for all things swine-related and particularly for all things Wrecked-related is pretty self-evident to those who pay attention to such things, and is generally shared by them as well. One of my favorite albums, probably on my top ten all-time in fact.
I've got a sucker punched, tarred and feathered heart / It can beat no more in vain

2. Razed in Black - Solution. I know that I'm putatively listening to my 6.5 GB worth of favorite tracks, but the shuffle is really trying to put together a Greatest Hits album, isn't it? Another great song by another great band, off of his best album. And like all great Razed in Black tracks, the lyrics are truly, epically embarrassing to sing along to.
Peel away my skin / Ready to say goodbye

3. Dr. Octagon - Trees. I don't care if The Return of Dr. Octagon isn't an official release. It's available on emusic, and Dr. Octagonecologyst isn't. And it's got some great beeps.
The trees are dying (trees are dying) / Information is more concealed

4. Snake River Conspiracy - Casualty. I really really really loved this album, despite my lack of interest/annoyance at "Vulcan." It had a great sound that was decently unique, but more importantly filled a niche that was unoccupied at the time. I specifically loved this song because they were willing to be slow and a little bit musically minimalist in order to let the vocals carry the track, but still managed to have enough going on to maintain a catchy beat and keep me interested. I have no idea what ended up happening to SRC; I assume they were a major label casualty because I can't imagine this album did as well as it should have.
You turn me on and on and on and on and on and on / You turn me on

5. Das Ich - Destillat (VNV Nation remix). Okay, I remember back in the oth.net days tracking down the only-released-in-Germany double-disc remix album that this was on, and this was the only good track. I'm sort of surprised I still have it, if only because of the number of hard drive crashes and assorted music collection disasters that have occurred in the inteim. I was unsurprised when I started going out that this was the only Das Ich track anyone ever played; and also unsurprising that it got as much play as it did. Like many VNV Nation remixes (and most early ones, I think), this is almost excessively clubby.
Gib mir dein Destillat / Gib mir mein Alltagstod / Gib mir mein Gnadenbrot / zur Ewigkeit

6. Snoop Doggy Dogg - Gin & Juice. I don't think any explanation or commentary is required.
I had to back up off of it and sit my cup down / Tanqueray and chronic, yeah I'm fucked up now

7. Zilch - Inside the Pervert Mound. Without this track (found by Phil on the Heavy Metal 2000 soundtrack, although this is the album version), I would've never started listening to J-rock. Or probably even any Japanese music that wasn't an anime soundtrack. Well, maybe I would've after I saw Moon Child. I'm sad that I discovered Hide posthumously, but I'm glad I discovered him at all because Psyence and 3... 2... 1 could both easily end up on a top ten all-time based on my mood on a given day.
She can smell shame inside of me / She can tell I'm a liar

8. Skunk Anansie - Rise Up. Skunk Anansie was another pretty awesome band that I suspect got screwed by signing with a major label whose expectations they had no hope of achieving. But on the other hand, from some quick wikipediaing, they seem to have been a bit bigger in the UK than I realized, so what do I know? Apparently they've recently gotten back together & are doing a greatest hits tour. That's realized.
You're losing all of your good convictions / Your integrity slowly watered down

9. Apoptygma Berzerk - Deep Red. Good old-fashioned, cheesy poppy fun. At some point Stephan stopped pretending to be some sort of gothic/industrial band and just acknowledged that he was really just a house musician. I think that coming out of the closet rather negatively his ability to make music that was remotely interesting. Let that be a lesson to all of you.
I will wait for you to scream and shout / But you open your mouth and blood comes out

10. Foetus - The Need Machine. I think I really like this song not because it itself is awesome (although it is), but because listening to it reminds me how AWESOME it was live, which was a lot. Probably my favorite Foetus album, too, which is of course saying a lot.
Give me librium or give me meth / I'll filter out the nutrients / And cut the rest to mix a mickey finn

11. SPECIAL BONUS TRACK: Primal Fear - Silver & Gold. It came on, I had to report it. I mean, what was I supposed to do?
We're silver and gold / We're searching for souls / ????????????????????????????

Cris just started watching Lilo & Stitch. All of the humans have excessively large and rather oddly positioned noses. I find this quite off-putting.

Also, the main character is apparently a psychopath.

No more laptops?

Okay, we already know the story, but did you know...

Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., introduced a bill Thursday to ban nonessential electronics, including personal laptops, from the cockpit.

"We simply want to ensure that, with all of the electronic distractions available these days, flying the plane remains the their one and only focus," Menendez said in a statement.

Okay, come on. We all know these guys really managed to both fall asleep in the flight deck and didn't wake up until the plane was in Wisconsin. But instead of addressing the actual problem, you want to make sure to take away their excuse? Sheesh.

Faith manages

"Babylon 5 was the last of the Babylon stations. There would never be another. It changed the future, and it changed us. It taught us that we have to create the future, or others will do it for us. It showed us that we have to care for one another because if we don't, who will? And that true strength sometimes comes from the most unlikely places. Mostly, though, I think it gave us hope that there can always be new beginnings. Even for people like us."

Basic Excel feature request

This seems like it should be simple. I want to be able to make a worksheet full of data and charts showing assorted data summaries. I want to be able to <s>cut</s> copy and paste that into a new worksheet, and plug in a new day's batch of data. (So far, no problem). I would then love to be able to click a button that updates all of the graphs on the worksheet to the data in the same location on that worksheet.

I suppose I could probably use a template to do this, but A: don't wanna, B: I do make enough day-to-day changes to my data analysis that I would like to be able to easily choose between how I analyzed the data yesterday and how I analyzed it a week or three months ago, and C: I don't have enough faith in Excel to actually have gotten that far right.

The really frustrating thing is that this has gotten significantly harder since I upgraded to 2007, which is otherwise a significant improvement. Whereas before it could be accomplished with a right-click-left-click-enter or a right-click-tab-left-click-repeat-enter, it's now an complicated process that takes a couple minutes for each chart, which is really frustrating when I'm trying to update a dozen charts or so per worksheet while catching up on a week or two's worth of data.

[/vent]
